Why is vitamin D important?

Vitamin D helps our body to absorb calcium from the diet therefore helps in maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It also helps in proper functioning of the muscles and the immune system.

Two types of vitamin D

There are two types of vitamin D in food: Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. UV radiation from sunlight can produce Vitamin D2 and D3. It is also naturally found in animal-based food products. In plants, fungi and mushrooms contain Vitamin D.

The differences between population groups

Some people are more prone to deficiency of Vitamin D. Older people, young children, women during pregnancy, people with a darker skin colour and people do not go out often need extra vitamin D.
